Lowercase, old-style Roman letters are influenced by Italian script. The style of the characters reflects the shapes of letters written with a broad-nibbed pen, which is typical of the period. Many of the Old Style Roman letters are based on handwriting like this. Garamond is an early example of this kind of typeface. It was developed by Claude Garamond in the 1540s, and interpretations of this font are still very popular today. Figure 5.14 shows the fonts of the Times New Roman typeface, an Old Style font that was developed in the 1930s for use in The Times newspaper. So you can see that Old Style Roman fonts are not determined by their date of origin but the characteristics of the typeface. The Old Style typefaces have a fairly universal line weight; the thinner lines that form the crossbars and strokes are only marginally thinner than the fatter uprights. The serifs tend to be curved very gradually and often protrude above the letters.
